From 14-17 March our TRR274 research consortium members met together with invited experts from the fields of immunology, glial biology and neuronal biology in quiet surroundings at the monastery Kloster Irsee near Munich. As well as listening to talks by our guests (Britta Eickholt, Germany; Cinthia Farina, Italy; Simone di Giovanni, UK; Luisa Klotz, Germany; Steffen Jung, Israel; Roland Liblau, France; Mónica Sousa, Portugal; Anna Williams, UK; Wee V. Yong, Canada), we presented our own research. These talks formed the basis of much animated discussion and exchange of ideas, both in the meeting room and informally during meals and social time. The photo shows the staircase at Kloster Irsee, as a symbol for advancing our research into understanding the biology of the multi-cellular response that determines recovery after CNS injury (including damage from neuroimmunological diseases such as multiple sclerosis). The ultimate goal is to develop intervention strategies that guide damaged CNS tissue towards recovery.
